Creative Acrylics II

Building on previous classes, this course is suited to individuals with a basic background in acrylics who have basic paint supplies and are able to buy a gel medium, matte medium and light molding paste.

Participants are responsible for purchasing their own supplies. While some standard equipment will be supplied, you will need the following to ensure the best experience:

· Drawing tools including an eraser and a good knead able eraser as well as good quality paper

· Brushes - synthetic brushes in rounds, flats and filbert, palette knife (Stay wet palette is best)

· Painting supports - canvas, watercolor paper 140# or more, art panel

· Color wheel to guide mixing


Colors of paint in tubes:

Absolute Basic: Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, White, Black.

Better choice: Cadmium red hue, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium yellow light hue, Naples yellow, yellow ochre, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, purple, sap green, viridian green, Burnt Sienna, burnt umber, Titanium White x 2, Mars Black


Adding interest:

Gels Mediums to extend paint or to use as a glue in multimedia work

Molding pastes to create impasto effects

Collect pictures to copy or inspire your work. Your original photos are best.

Collect interesting paper for mixed media. Stencils and stamps are interesting too.


Course content:

1. First class is a review of the basics of acrylic paints, gel, mediums and pastes. Will use some multimedia paper to try these out.

2. Compose a topic for painting and make preliminary sketches and under painting

3. Start to compose painting on 16 x 20 canvas

4. Complete painting using the new gel, medium and paste in the process.

Impressionistic Painting

Have you ever wanted to paint like the great Impressionists - Degas, Pisssaro, Renoir, Morisot, Manet or Monet? Now is your chance. Join art historian and artist, Kristen Treusch, from SquarePeg Tours for a brief talk on art history and learn, grow and expand your mind and creative side!

Following the talk, you will break out your colours to create your very own masterpiece under Kristen’s guidance. If you prefer, you can draw your own work onto your canvas or you can provide a photo to us and Kristen will prepare your canvas with your image so all you will need to do is paint!

Junk Journals

Junk journals are meant to be explored, written in, doodled in, a place to log events or hide the little mementos of a life. It can be a diary, a planner, an art journal, an inspiration place. The possibilities are endless and you choose its destiny.

This workshop will teach you how to construct a basic junk journal. All materials are included in the cost of the workshop. Space is limited to 6 participants.

Macramé Tree of Life

We are very excited to welcome Brenda back for another macramé class at the Heritage Home for the Arts.

This time, you will be making a Tree of Life wall hanging featuring beautiful handmade lamp work beads by Jean Thomson. This is not a beginners class and some macramé background is necessary. All materials are included for the class. Limit of 6 participants.

Book Binding Class

We will be making a Cross Structure Binding, Basic style. This versatile cover binding offers endless combinations for weaving front and back covers! Another feature of this book is that is opens flat. Great to write, draw or paint in!

We will discuss elements of design and variation as you make your own blank journal.

Finished size is 4 3/4" x 6 1/4" and will contain 120 pages to fill with whatever you desire.

Supplies will be provided. We are using 70 lb drawing paper. If you wish to use watercolor paper, please bring your own (140 lb or less) and cut to 9" x 12".

If you own a cutting mat, please bring it to the class.

Gel-Print Introductory & Advanced Gel Print Collage

Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

The Friday evening class will be an introductory workshop on the basics of gel printing for anyone who was not able to take Heather’s earlier workshop this summer. This workshop is a prerequisite for the Advanced Gel Print Collage workshop.

On Saturday, you will be introduced to collages. A collage is created from the collection of gel-prints. Thinner paper is used to facilitate easier tearing and blending of the pieces. Personal photographs or quilt patterns would be the inspiration. All materials are included in the cost of the workshop. Participants can bring a photo for inspiration, their own collection of pattern making tools (anything not sharp) as well as their own paints and stencils.

You will learn how to print papers, experiment with texture making materials, and design and assemble a collage. Space is limited to 6 participants

Paverpol for Beginners
