The Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council is proud to work with many organizations and groups in our community. Our work with Killarney schools is particularly important to us as it allows us to help schools foster creativity and artistic expression in our children and youth and to introduce them to unique experiences in the arts.

Importance of art for children and youth

We know that there is a demonstrable, positive correlation between schoolchildren’s grades in math and literacy, and their involvement with drama or music activities. We also know that art encompasses all the developmental domains in child development. Art can enhance fine and gross motor skills, helpful in fine-tuning muscle control and hand and finger muscles used to properly hold and use pens and pencils. Art also enhances children’s cognitive development which can help kids with their early math skills.

Art activities can help children’s social and emotional development. Children learn about themselves and others through art activities. Art helps build self-esteem and allows children and youth express their uniqueness and creative side.
